Statistics from the Environment Agency (EA) show there is an average of one fire a day on waste and recycling sites in the UK.

This is supported by a recent industry survey which revealed that 64% of waste operators had been affected in some way by fire, that’s two out of three people working in the industry. 

It’s on the back of this rise that many waste and recycling sites, including metal recycling and end of life vehicle depollution, are coming under increasing scrutiny from the EA.

James Mountain, Sales and Marketing Manager at fire protection company Fire Shield Systems Ltd, said “the company was being contacted by more and more waste and recycling operators worrying about how to gain their fire prevention plans”.

“Business owners aren’t specialists in fire regulations and as a result many find themselves bombarded with information and fearful of the overall final cost to their business,” said James. “They simply don’t know which way to turn.”

“There’s a lot of confusion out there at the moment and it can lead people into panic-buying more than they need, or in some cases buying completely the wrong solutions for their site.”

To overcome this Fire Shield Systems offers a site evaluation option, where it visits the customer’s site free of charge and carries out a full assessment before drawing up a range of options available to the customer.

One recent example of this was when Fire Shield Systems visited scrap metal merchants RJ King near Bristol, who is looking to protect its site.

The company has been running since 1952 and is an authorised end of life vehicle treatment centre, as well as specialist in scrap metal. 

James continued: “Like many of our customers, RJ King has a complex set of requirements because of the varied and high-risk nature of its business.

“We spent a couple of hours at the site with the owner, reviewing the site and gaining an understanding of how it works. An important part of the assessment is to discuss with the client their main concerns with regards to fire risk.

“We then gave our own insights based on our wealth of experience and talked through issues such as insurance requirements, government agency requirements and customer specific asset or building protection needs.

“Our aim is to gain a better understanding of any additional factors which may influence solutions and the designs we propose, as well as to gain an understanding of any environmental implications with respect to materials being processed and stored.”

Following the assessment the team at Fire Shield Systems review the options available and report back to the customer.

“We know cost can be a big factor for some businesses so aiming to find the right solution at an affordable price is top of our agenda,” said James. “We’re here to provide the best for the customer whatever their situation.”
