Two key factors in any modern yard is safety and efficiency. Combining these not only helps increase profit but peace of mind. This is something that Dragan Vavan, Managing Director of MotorGreen wanted to achieve. He invited us to his site in Sandiacre, near Nottingham to check out a recently purchased depollution system which was installed just three months ago.

With an increase in sales, Dragan said he realised that he needed to reassess how best MotorGreen could become more efficient, so just over a year ago he got in touch with Chesterfield Recycling Ltd, UK representatives of Vortex depollution systems to see if they could create a piece of equipment.

Emphasis was very much focused on safety and efficiency especially when it comes to the staff who will work on the unit. Chesterfield Recycling, with input from Dragan, were the creators, makers and installers of this impressive bespoke kit.

Dragan Vavan, MotorGreen MD said:

“We’re very pleased with the new equipment. It will significantly increase our ELV depollution capacity, allowing us to depollute up to 50 ELVs a day. At the same time, this new rig meets all the relevant Health and Safety requirements, and is ATEX approved, which reduces the risk of fire due to generation of explosive atmospheres. This is an even more important consideration now with the requirement for an FPP.”

The system which has been discussed for a year in order to get the exact kit that was necessary for MotorGreen was finally installed at the beginning of the year. The result was a bespoke covered unit which at full capacity can depollute up to 50 cars a day. Dragan told us that they currently depollute 30 cars a day with their two man team.

When we visited the site we also met Tim Crosby and Pete Cantrill from Chesterfield Recycling who talked us through the various elements of the kit, focusing on the safety aspect in particular and with safety in mind, barriers around the entire rig were put in place and operated from a system behind the access point at the top. The entrance point is closed first to ensure there is no one standing on the working area of the rig, then the barriers around the vehicle stand and at the front are lowered in order to forklift a vehicle on and off the rig. Only when the barriers are raised up, the access gate is then opened.

The entire rig is operated by pneumatics alone, something which was difficult to achieve during the production but Pete Cantrill, the engineer of Chesterfield Recycling persevered, in fact he said that he “enjoyed the challenge.”


The platform on which vehicles sit was also slightly problematic during the design process as it had to be suitable to fit vehicles varying in length including vans.

The system was built to Dragan’s specific requirements, with safety, speed and efficiency top of the agenda. He said each vehicle takes between 10 and 15 minutes to be depolluted, something which were able to witness whilst visiting their site.

Chesterfield Recycling pride themselves on giving their customers exactly what they want. Tim said “You tell us what you want, we’ll build it.”

As for efficiency, the depollution system at MotorGreen, allows two people to work at the same time with the raised platform. One at the top removing the tyres and battery and coolants etc and one underneath removing the fuel with a fuel punch rather than a drill also the oil is extracted at the same time.

Once the vehicle is depolluted, the parts are stored in designated areas in the workstation to avoid traipsing to other areas on the site; tyres are stacked on one side and batteries are placed in containers to the left which will then be removed by a forklift once the barriers are opened. Fuels are pumped 100 yards away to the relevant tanks which are extracted with the use of a quiet 15 bar pressure unit which sits adjacent to the depollution system.

There is no use of electrics on the rig itself only pneumatics. The lighting which is ATEX approved is the only electrical aspect in the area which are of course fireproof, this along with the overalls the team wears.

As for weight barring, the vehicle stand is capable of holding 10 tonnes and the tyre and battery storage areas can hold 2 tonnes combined.
