With just over two months until the return of CARS & MRE, the organisers have provided a preview of some of the key topics to be addressed in the conference theatres at the two-day event on 29-30 September at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry.

The landscape for vehicle recyclers has changed somewhat since just a year ago and while some themes remain from the planned agenda for the June 2020 event, we are delighted to provide a glimpse of some of the key conference sessions visitors can expect to be able to participate in.

Developing a Market for Green Parts

The recently developed parts certification scheme, green parts and their use in insurance repair will form a key session at CARS 2021. Visitors will hear from: the certification body, the VRAC, insurer, Aviva along with a number of stakeholders across two dedicated sessions. Other contributors include repairer James Dunn from AW Repair, Ian Hill from Hills Salvage and Laura Richards from eBay.

The packed two-day agenda will also explore the challenges and opportunities presented by Lithium-Ion batteries. Speakers will explore safe handling and removal; potential second life uses and how to extract maximum value from them. 

The panel features second use professional Jamie Marley from Second Life EV Batteries, processing specialist, Alan Colledge from Cawleys and electric vehicle expert, Andy Latham.

CARS provides a mixture of engaging content and practical case studies for operators. This year, reflecting on the past 18 months, the event hones in on key topics for employees and employers. Hear from Binn Group and charity SPEAK on how they implemented a simple but effective mental health awareness campaign. Hear from Employment experts Croner on the changing needs of staff as restrictions are lifted and from Chris Williams at Europeam Metal Recycling on their learning, development and apprenticeships programme.

Other sessions at the event include a headline session on the future of the automotive industry, European Developments and illegal operators plus much, much more.

Owain joined Volvo Cars in June 2021 to lead Circular Economy in the Global Sustainability Team. The company has committed to being a circular business by 2040 and has financial, recycled content and CO2 based targets for 2025, all of which Owain is working across the company to make happen. Owain previously worked for circular economy consultancy Oakdene Hollins where he advised businesses on evidence led circular economy implementation.

The presentation will cover the work Volvo Cars is doing to achieve 2025 but mainly focus on the transformational work towards 2040 and the business and value chain changes being considered. Attention will be paid to the way vehicles are being dealt with at the end of life and the complexities of closing material and component loops. Opportunities and challenges which Volvo Cars is facing will be presented including engagement with 3rd parties and increasing pressure from stakeholders.
