The future of the automotive industry

This year’s opening headline session looks at the future of the wider automotive sector identifying trends and offering predictions for the next decade.

Andrew Marsh

Andrew Marsh of Auto industry Consulting will tackle key questions on the future of the sector in his opening address, ‘Manufacturers of all types of vehicles scramble to avoid direct green taxation and face medium-term issues too. Who will survive? What will they make? What about ATFs?’

Approaching from a technical standpoint, Louis Piper, Professor of Electrochemical Materials at WMG will present an overview of the research opportunities and challenges for manufacturing tomorrow’s EV batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries session & skills lab

As the automotive industry moves forward and electric vehicles become increasingly common on the roads, the conference programme focuses on how to handle, process and profit from lithium-ion batteries. Day two features a session dedicated to second life uses, safe handling and storage and how to maximise the value of batteries.

The Skills Lab, designed for smaller groups and more hands-on workshops will allow visitors to get up close with high voltage vehicle technology, and learn about the risks and how to keep you, your team and your business safe as you treat end of life, high voltage vehicles.

High voltage tools and personal protective equipment will be demonstrated as a vehicle is made safe and the high voltage battery removed.

Fire Prevention & control

Over and above vehicle batteries, lithium-ion batteries are a frequent cause of fires at waste and recycling sites. To help tackle the blight of fires on the environment and local communities, the Environment Agency, developed guidance to assist organisations in preventing the cause of fires.

Peter Buckley, senior advisor at the EA will discuss ‘the recent revisions to the EA Fire Prevention Plan Guidance 2021, the implications for industry and  how the guidance can be used to mitigate fires in the ELV and metal recycling sectors.’

The developing market for second-hand parts

The highlight of the conference programme though is a two-part session dedicated to the use of second-hand vehicle parts in repair. Featuring contributions from a variety of key stakeholders including VRA Certification, eBay, Aviva, AW repair, ABP Club and more, the session is set to provide the first opportunity for the industry to connect and share experiences since the launch of the certification scheme.
