Six students from regional colleges have been shortlisted in a competition to design a car sticker for UDonateacar, the community charity scheme from Silverlake Automotive Recycling [Silverlake]. Final judging takes place on 10th March, after which the winning design will go into production.
UDonateacar makes it easy for people who sell their vehicle to Silverlake to donate as little, or as much as they want from the sale to support small, local charities helping to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged people. Silverlake handles all the paperwork and transfers 100% of the donation to the scheme’s national charity partner, Global’s Make Some Noise, which provides grants to small charities that may otherwise be overlooked. In the Southampton area examples of charities benefiting from the grants include Abbey’s Heroes supporting children, young people and their families with a cancer diagnosis and Yellow Door established to prevent and respond to sexual abuse.
Design students from six regional colleges were invited to take part in the competition including Fareham College, Portsmouth College, Itchen College, Eastleigh College. Barton Peveril College and Peter Symonds College. Excited to have secured a shortlist position are Arwen Lawton, Amelia Ham, Madison Meah, Tom Odell, Holly Southwell and Abigail Austin.
The Mayor of Southampton, Alex Houghton, and the Southampton Daily Echo form part of the judging panel which also includes representatives from Global’s Make Some Noise, Silverlake and KINTO UK which supports UDonateacar by providing an electric vehicle. Members of the public who make a donation through UDonateacar will receive the winning design car sticker to display in their car. A follow-up competition on social media will launch later this year and involve spotting and photographing the stickers as they are seen in cars across the region.
Alex Houghton, Mayor of Southampton said:
“I’m delighted to be helping to judge the UDonateacar.com car sticker design competition. This is a wonderful opportunity for our regional design students to use their developing skills to help to promote this charitable scheme that supports disadvantaged people across the UK. It will be very interesting to see the different creative approaches to designing the car sticker and exciting to see the winning entry produced and in circulation, displayed on the back windscreens of cars where the owners have donated some of the value of their old car through UDonateacar.com.”
Allen Prebble, Managing Director, of Silverlake Automotive Recycling said:
“UDonateacar is one of the ways Silverlake can support community, give back and help to make a difference. Charities are struggling for funding with the after-effects of the pandemic plus the rise in the cost of living, and any small amount people can spare really helps. Our scheme makes it easy to donate anything from £5 upwards. It’s been great to see the enthusiasm and talent in the young people of our region who entered this competition and it’s going to be amazing to see the UDonateacar sticker out and about in a couple of months. I’m sure the winning student will feel immense pride in their achievement. I’d like to thank the regional colleges for their support and all the judges for investing their time in this latest UDonateacar initiative. Watch out for more from the UDonateacar team as the year goes on!”
