Recycling specialist Recycling Lives is extending its drive to work with the justice system to help lower re-offending rates and enable rehabilitation by providing work opportunities for offenders at a prison in Hertfordshire.

It is the first time Recycling Lives has collaborated with prisons beyond the North of England. The programme to employ people within the justice system has been highly successful. It is part of a plan to extend the award-winning initiative across the UK.
Her Majesty’s Prison The Mount, near Hemel Hempstead, is a Category C male adult training and resettlement prison. Two offenders are being Released on Temporary Licence (RoTL) to work at Recycling Lives sites in the south of England as part of a programme to integrate them back into society on their release.
Finding work is an important stage in the rehabilitation process for people emerging from the justice system and is a vital element in avoiding re-offending. To ease the transition for the group from HMP The Mount and to reduce the cost to the justice system, Recycling Lives provides a vehicle to travel daily to their new work locations.
Alison Renville from New Futures Network is the Regional Employment Broker at Ministry of Justice UK who made initial introductions to HMP The Mount for Recycling Lives.
She commented: “Working with Recycling Lives is a pleasure as they are passionate about reducing re-offending through employment. Their commitment and drive to make the most of any opportunities are impressive. Proof of Recycling Lives’ success in making a difference was evident when speaking to one of their RoTL placements who described the life-changing effect Recycling Lives had on them and how they were ready to change their lives for the better after many years of offending because of the opportunity Recycling Lives had given them.”
Jim Bridger, Head of Reducing Re-Offending at HMP The Mount, added:
“The positive links forged with Recycling Lives Ltd, have afforded the men in the care of HMP The Mount the opportunity to access work placements via the RoTL (Release on Temporary Licence) process and thereby improving employment outcomes for prison leavers.
By offering these opportunities, Recycling Lives are pro-actively supporting the delivery of our reducing re-offending programme, aiding the future of rehabilitation and providing hope and a sense of purpose to those men and women engaging with them.”
Barry Flanagan is Recycling Lives’ Sustainability Manager with primary responsibility for maintaining social value focus as sector circular economy leader. He explained:
“Securing sustainable employment opportunities is a key part of avoiding re-offending. Recycling Lives has enjoyed outstanding success collaborating with prisons in the North West. Working with HMP The Mount reflects our determination to extend the commitment to offender rehabilitation that has helped to make Recycling Lives a benchmark for positive and authentic social impact. We are a nationwide business, and we are now seeking to extend this award-winning activity across the country, to deliver greater benefits and change more lives for the better.”
