CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Update Q1 2022

ATF network CarTakeBack, reports record-breaking scrap car prices in Q1. Prices from the ATFs in the network have been on the up throughout the year so far, each month breaking the previous months’ record of being the highest average price seen.

 

January

January’s average price for scrap cars was up by 1% compared to December. As well as increasing month on month, prices were up by 31% compared to January 2021.

February

Prices in February were 5% higher than those on offer in January and scrap car prices were up by 38% compared to February 2021.

March

March saw the most considerable increases, ending the quarter on a high. The average price for a scrap car was 15% higher than prices on offer in February! As well as increasing month on month, scrap car prices were up by 46% compared to March 2021. Early signs show that these high prices could maintain into April.

Top Cars Scrapped

The Ford Focus was unsurprisingly the most frequently scrapped car at CarTakeBack ATFs across the UK in Q1. The average value of a Ford Focus with the network’s ATFs increased by 16% in March compared to February.

About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. The prices are shown as a percentage, using the first month as the base price.

We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, by adjusting the prices to show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

Attention will be paid to the way vehicles are being dealt with at the end of life and the complexities of closing material and component loops. Opportunities and challenges which Volvo Cars is facing will be presented including engagement with 3rd parties and increasing pressure from stakeholders.
