Coventry, UK – Malvern Panalytical, a global leader in materials analysis, is pleased to announce its participation in the upcoming CARS & MRE 2023 exhibition, taking place on 24-25 May at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry. At the event, Malvern Panalytical will showcase its latest product, Epsilon 1, a small but powerful portable X-ray analyser that offers excellent precision and accuracy for the analysis of recycled catalytic converters.

The purchasing and recycling of catalytic converters is a highly profitable industry. With the precious metals contained in these devices, such as Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium, worth hundreds of pounds per gram, it’s crucial to have accurate measurements of the content to ensure integrity in the buying and selling of these commodities. In fact, globally, around 90 tonnes of Platinum, 300 tonnes of Palladium, and 30 tonnes of Rhodium are used each year to build catalytic converters.

Malvern Panalytical’s Epsilon 1 is a robust tool that works in harsh environments to measure Palladium, Rhodium, and Platinum along with other elements to provide an accurate measurement of content. With its portable and compact design, the Epsilon 1 can be taken to the source, reducing the need for sample transport and preparation, saving time and cost.

“Sample preparation is easy where a sample is weighed into a sample cup, and the Epsilon 1 comes pre-calibrated and validated with certified reference standards,” said Terry Soteriou, Business Development Manager from Malvern Panalytical. “The improvement in accuracy compared to other types of instruments directly relates to cost savings in the thousands, so every gram counts!”
