Building Competence and Capability Within Vehicle Depollution and Dismantling: ELV Training at CARS 2023 – Copy

ELV Training offers depollution and dismantling training for the vehicle recycling industry, and is the only training organisation in the UK currently offering qualifications that adhere to the recognised competency standard for ELV technical professionals, the IMI’s National Occupational Standards. Join them at the CARS 2023 Skills Lab to learn how their first of its kind training can help vehicle recycling businesses stay ahead in a rapidly evolving industry.

At the CARS & MRE 2023 event, ELV Training will be supporting the Salvage Wire Skills Lab, delivering sessions across the two-day show that examine the effectiveness of current workplace depollution training, including whether or not (in its current format) it provides a good return on investment, as well as how to maximise business potential for treatment facilities and dismantling operations alike.

“Change is inevitable, and companies must continually evolve to stay relevant, innovative, and competitive – the vehicle depollution and dismantling sector is no different. If treatment facilities do not respond to change positively, then they quickly become irrelevant. Here at ELV Training, we believe that in order to keep pace with the speed at which dismantling businesses need to adapt, employee training needs to change and become much more far-reaching than just enabling employers to meet their legal duty to protect employees. Our Skills Lab will demonstrate how workplace training can be a real force for change in the vehicle dismantling industry, and how a standardised training programme, as opposed to traditional peer-to-peer handover training, can address many of the challenges the sector currently faces.”

ELV Training will be discussing how UK decarbonisation plans and the rapid growth of electric vehicle adoption are impacting the industry. The safe decommissioning of electric and hybrid-powered vehicles, alongside traditional ICE vehicles, adds complexity that will require ATFs not only to develop new processes and upskill their workforce but also make significant investment in specialist tools and equipment. They will consider that although the industry broadly recognises the need to evolve to accommodate EVs, large parts of the sector are still yet to tackle this.

Another focal point will be that as important as electric is to our motoring future, there are more immediate challenges to consider. With 96.6% of cars on UK roads still fossil-fuelled, and a need to transition to zero emissions by 2035, the industry must equip itself with the skills and ability to manage this rapid evolution. The vehicle dismantling sector is already experiencing unprecedented numbers of ICE vehicles being decommissioned, as well as a significant increase in demand for green parts, as consumers opt to run cars for longer due to new car supply chain issues and recent economic inflation. Further compounding these challenges are the historic difficulties experienced with recruitment and long-term retention of depollution technicians, which already needlessly costs businesses significantly. ELV Training will be sharing some valuable industry best practice on how companies are successfully managing to overcome these challenges through better training.

“Let’s not forget appreciation and recognition; two important and major factors of employee motivation. ELV Training believes in acknowledging the vital work of vehicle technicians who safely and compliantly carry out the depollution of the 1.5 million UK cars that reach the end of their life annually. That’s why we host the only national vehicle depollution register for technicians, ensuring that any Authorised Treatment Facility can quickly verify a technician’s qualification, and operatives can evidence that they have obtained the necessary knowledge and skills to stand out from the competition.

We hope that you will find the time to join us during your visit to CARS and hear how our training can not only protect your most valuable assets, your workers, but also your equipment, your reputation, and your bottom line. Take this opportunity to upskill yourself on how an investment in training can become a statement of intent that will ensure your vehicle dismantling and recycling business remains ahead of the competition and fit for the future. We look forward to seeing you there…”

Head of Circular Economy at Volvo Cars

Owain joined Volvo Cars in June 2021 to lead Circular Economy in the Global Sustainability Team. The company has committed to being a circular business by 2040 and has financial, recycled content and CO2 based targets for 2025, all of which Owain is working across the company to make happen. Turning into a circular business and the importance of vehicle reuse and recycling.

The presentation will cover the work Volvo Cars is doing to achieve 2025 but mainly focus on the transformational work towards 2040 and the business and value chain changes being considered. Attention will be paid to the way vehicles are being dealt with at the end of life and the complexities of closing material and component loops.
