Why an energy management system could be the secret to your business success in 2024 p

Don’t worry, it’s not just you. Running a successful business in 2024 is more challenging than ever, with higher costs and squeezed margins making any profits earned seem like a small miracle.

In fact, a recent PwC survey revealed that 22% of business view energy prices as their biggest concern, which opens up an incredible opportunity for all businesses to take control of their energy efficiency, bring down their costs and secure their future.

Implementing an energy management system is a smart way to minimise energy consumption in every aspect of your operations and unlock the potential profits that already exist in your business.

There is also an opportunity to ISO-certify your energy management system. By doing this it is possible to integrate into your other systems and provide a platform for businesses to use the structure to deliver against your sustainability objectives, ahead of the UK’s 2050 net-zero target.

At Mayer, we specialise in helping companies to design, deliver and maintain a range of management systems, including those focusing on environmental protection, occupational health and safety and cyber security. When it comes to energy management systems, our teams can help your business develop the right system for your specific needs.

For example, many larger companies are subject to a mandatory energy audit by the government’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) with the next compliance cycle falling this year.

ESOS is the way the UK is implementing the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive – and will obligate all businesses which employ 250 or more people or those with an annual turnover in excess of £44 million (and an annual balance sheet total in excess of £38 million).

Meanwhile, UK registered establishments of an overseas company – no matter their size – are also required to take part in ESOS if “any other part of their global corporate group activities in the UK meet the ESOS qualifying criteria.”

These businesses must be compliant with the ESOS regulations by 5th June 2024, and Mayer can ensure that whether you choose to go down the ESOS assessment route or the ISO-certified energy management system route, you have a route to compliance with these requirements.

ESOS audits will be undertaken every four years, Mayer’s training, gap analysis and internal auditing service can also guarantee that companies with a well-designed energy management system can remain compliant going forward.

So, how does our service work? Our experts can come to your site for a free, no-obligation chat to learn more about your needs, your operations, and to outline the potential benefits that your company could gain from becoming more energy efficient. Our teams can then create a bespoke proposal for an energy management system that fits in with how your employees already work, offering training to ensure they understand – and can meet – all the requirements of the ISO certification process.

Once the system has been implemented, your company will be ready to be externally audited, but – so there are no surprises on the day – Mayer can also run internal audits so that you and your team know where any areas for improvement might exist. Our teams can then provide further training where needed.

It’s worth noting that there are a huge number of other benefits to implementing an energy management system from increasing operational efficiency, reducing carbon emissions to the reputational boost your firm will gain from demonstrating that your operations are increasing sustainable.

In a world of rising prices and global uncertainty, could the right energy management system be the difference between your company making a profit or loss in 2024?
