The UK Auto Recyclers ARA Convention Road Trip 2024 returns, offering an exciting journey through top automotive recycling businesses in North America, culminating at the ARA Convention in Reno.

Participants will gain firsthand experience with the operations of US recyclers, including their standards, sales operations, vehicle storage, dismantling, parts distribution, and more. This trip provides a unique opportunity to meet US auto recyclers in their workplaces and network with a select group of UK, European, and US professionals.

Sunday, 20th October – Arrive in Sacramento

Participants will meet at the Best Western Plus Orchid Hotel and Suites, Roseville, California, where the group will be based for 3 nights. Click here for hotel details and booking information.

Monday, 21st October – Wednesday, 23rd October

The road trip will include visits to ARA members in the area, including several full-service and self-service yards, as well as a Tesla specialist. A full day will be spent at nearby Rancho Cordova, where around 30 recyclers operate on Recycle Road, Hydraulics Drive, and Dismantle Court.

On Monday and Tuesday, evening dinners will be at a Western-themed steak and rib restaurant and a restaurant at the Old Sacramento Waterfront and State Railroad Museum. Some US recyclers will join the group for one of these evenings.

Wednesday, 23rd October

The group will visit an LKQ facility and a truck dismantler, taking a scenic drive past Lake Tahoe. Then, they will head towards Reno for the 81st ARA Convention.

Thursday, 24th October – Saturday, 26th October

Owain joined Volvo Cars in June 2021 to lead Circular Economy in the Global Sustainability Team. The company has committed to being a circular business by 2040 and has financial, recycled content and CO2 based targets for 2025, all of which Owain is working across the company to make happen. Owain previously worked for circular economy consultancy Oakdene Hollins where he advised businesses on evidence led circular economy implementation.

The presentation will cover the work Volvo Cars is doing to achieve 2025 but mainly focus on the transformational work towards 2040 and the business and value chain changes being considered. Attention will be paid to the way vehicles are being dealt with at the end of life and the complexities of closing material and component loops. Opportunities and challenges which Volvo Cars is facing will be presented including engagement with 3rd parties and increasing pressure from stakeholders.
