Adrees Nazir, owner of German Auto Breakers Ltd in Middlesbrough, talks about his journey into the vehicle recycling business. Starting during the challenges of COVID-19, he shares how he turned obstacles into opportunities, focusing on sustainability and growth. With a strong commitment to recycling and environmental responsibility, Adrees explains how his business is growing, achieving industry certifications, and introducing new services to impact the automotive industry positively.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities: Entering the Vehicle Recycling Industry
When the COVID pandemic presented challenges for the global supply chain, my business partners and I recognised a significant opportunity. We acquired a site with the vision of launching an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). This idea not only allowed us to harness the increasing demand for sustainability but also enabled us to actively promote a more environmentally responsible automotive sector.
Coming from a background far removed from the industry, my initial interest stemmed from working on a project for a vehicle manufacturer. During my time as a management consultant, I gained profound insights into ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting and understood the crucial role of ‘Green Parts’ in the automotive industry, particularly in the supply chain and accident repair sectors.
Overcoming Challenges in Establishing and Running a Vehicle Recycling Business
Establishing and operating a vehicle recycling business comes with its share of challenges, but overcoming them can pave the way for success. The process of obtaining necessary permits during COVID was particularly arduous; however, we were fortunate to benefit from the guidance of seasoned industry experts, which streamlined the process and increased our efficiency. Thankfully, we managed to obtain the EA permit in May 2023 and became operational in August 2023.
A critical aspect was ensuring our site was truly “fit for purpose.” We needed adequate warehouse capacity for inventory and sufficient yard space for operations. This focus on operational effectiveness aligns with our ambitious expansion plans, allowing us to utilise our space to its fullest potential.
Understanding the recycling process itself is essential for dismantling vehicles efficiently and maximising their value. We are committed to enhancing our knowledge and obtaining certifications that uphold the highest industry standards, ensuring we deliver exceptional service and value to our customers.
Operationally, finding a skilled workforce was another challenge; however, we have successfully built a specialised team. Each team member receives comprehensive training, ensuring they possess the necessary expertise to excel in their roles.
Stock acquisition remains our most significant challenge. Limited suppliers in the market result in Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs) facing challenges in sourcing inventory, particularly smaller operators. Navigating these high barriers to entry requires thoughtful planning and strategic solutions, but we are confident that with perseverance and innovation, we can thrive in this competitive landscape.
Ambitious Growth – Future Plans
Our ambitious plans for growth in the vehicle recycling industry are centred on several transformative initiatives that will set us apart from the competition. First, we are revitalising our yard to significantly increase capacity, enabling us to handle more vehicles efficiently and effectively.
We have worked diligently to obtain VRAC Certification and have recently passed our audit to become a certified vehicle recycler. This important certification enhances our credibility and provides customers with the confidence they need to buy from us.
Following the release of the VRA’s carbon emissions savings report, we are proud to reaffirm our commitment to achieving a 99% recycling rate. This ensures that every part and component is processed responsibly and recycled with care. The report highlights that the most significant emissions savings are derived from engines. In light of these findings, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our in-house engine supply and fit service, which began in January 2025 and will play a pivotal role in helping us reach our environmental goals. Additionally, we are eager to introduce our new website, designed to enhance our online presence and make customer interactions seamless and efficient. Together, we are driving towards a sustainable future!
Lastly, we plan to seek out strategic partnerships with other organisations to broaden our reach and enhance our capabilities. These impactful initiatives will not only drive our growth but will also play a crucial role in promoting a sustainable future for vehicle recycling in our community.
