Ford Focus Leads as Most Scrapped Vehicle with Above-Average Returns
The first quarter of 2025 saw average UK scrap car prices stabilise at £227, according to the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index. While the year opened with a dip, market conditions showed signs of resilience as Q1 progressed.

January began with a 3% drop in average scrap car prices compared to December 2024, with vehicles fetching an average of £223. The market rebounded slightly in February, reaching £230—not only a 3% month-on-month increase, but also higher than December’s average. March held relatively steady at £229, reflecting minimal volatility at quarter-end.
However, recyclers should be prepared for greater fluctuations ahead. Ongoing instability in the UK steel sector and uncertainty around global tariffs may result in more pronounced swings in metal pricing into Q2 and beyond. While occasional price peaks may offer marginal gains, the market trend remains difficult to predict.
From a recycler’s perspective, encouraging prompt processing of end-of-life vehicles continues to be the most reliable strategy. Outside of rare or collectible models, the value of most vehicles continues to depreciate over time. Market price is influenced by scrap metal demand, reusable parts recovery, and variables like vehicle weight, condition, and region.
In Q1 2025, the Ford Focus retained its position as the most frequently scrapped vehicle at CarTakeBack-affiliated recycling centres, with an average return of £239—5% above the general market average.
- January: £233
- February: £245 (+5%)
- March: £240 (-2%)
Despite some fluctuations, the Focus remains a strong performer in terms of scrap value, providing consistent returns for dismantlers.
Other Top Scrapped Vehicles
The Ford Fiesta saw the most significant month-on-month gain, with an 8% jump in February. However, March brought a general cooling across all top models, with average values falling compared to February.
About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, and the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
