Stuart Mann, Managing Director at Reclamet, provides insight into how the VRAC’s Digital Parts Platform is revolutionising the vehicle recycling industry. As demand for certified green parts increases, this transformative platform is enabling recyclers to operate smarter, faster, and more sustainably, ushering in a new era of efficiency and innovation.

The vehicle recycling industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation, and at the heart of this change is digitalisation. As consumer demand, environmental pressures, and regulatory expectations rise every year, vehicle recyclers are being challenged not only to grow, but to grow smarter. And that’s exactly where digital tech steps in.
For years, the sector has relied heavily on manual systems, paper-based systems, and fragmented processes. However, those days are fading, and fading fast. From inventory management to sales, compliance to customer engagement, digital tools are now central to scaling operations, improving efficiency, and staying competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
Putting smarter systems in place means a smarter, more agile business. Modern vehicle dismantling and stock management software now allows recyclers to track every single part of a vehicle with precision, from the moment a part enters the yard to the point of sale. These systems reduce errors, speed up turnaround times, and increase the likelihood of parts being found and sold, often within hours. And with online sales platforms – eBay, VRA’s Certified Parts Platform, and other used part networks, recyclers are now directly connected to national and international buyers, in real-time.
The VRA’s platform is intentionally selective, open only to certified recyclers who operate to the highest industry standards. It’s a concept that certified recyclers, such as Reclamet, have long welcomed. As Chas Ambrose of VRAC put it:
“We don’t want just anyone on the Parts Platform; the focus has to be on transparency and quality.”
While there are currently around 75 certified recyclers using the platform, their impact is significant, contributing a high volume of quality parts to the market. As more recyclers achieve certification, it becomes clear that they will be eager to join the platform as well.
Although still in its test phase, VRAC’s Parts Platform has over 1.3 million live parts and is being actively used by around 60 bodyshop companies as well as the major players in the insurance sector. For Chas Ambrose:
“This has been a phenomenal achievement since its launch in February 2025, and these numbers are only set to grow as more recyclers join the platform and more bodyshops and insurance companies demand certified green parts quickly and importantly through an incredibly efficient process.”
A standout feature of the VRAC Parts Platform is its AI-powered efficiency. Bodyshops can simply upload a repair estimate, and the system instantly generates a tailored shopping basket, optimised for availability, cost, and location, which streamlines the entire parts procurement process.
While some top-tier recyclers have yet to come on board, VRAC’s ultimate vision remains compelling: an industry-wide platform featuring 5 to 10 million parts, full engagement from 100% of UK bodyshops and groups, and a future where insurers demand only the highest-quality, certified used parts.
VRAC’s platform creates a level playing field for vehicle recyclers, big and small. If a discerning customer wants to buy a part in Aberdeen, Birmingham, or Canterbury, they can potentially source it locally, rather than wasting time, money, and carbon on transporting that part from the other side of the country.
But digital platforms aren’t just about convenience, they’re about insight. With the right tech in place, recyclers can analyse sales trends, track buyer behaviour, and make smarter purchasing decisions. This level of data-driven decision-making simply isn’t possible with outdated paper-based methods. It’s a complete game-changer.
And it all starts before a part hits the shelf. A core part of a recycler’s business is acquiring end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) to source high-quality, reusable parts. That process now relies on digital lead generation and smart Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems to streamline the journey from vehicle owner to vehicle recycler.
Whether it’s a private seller, an insurance write-off, or a fleet disposal, CRM platforms help recyclers manage enquiries, track vehicle intake, and follow up with potential sellers, all while capturing relevant data to optimise efficiencies.
As environmental regulations tighten, digital tools also help vehicle recyclers meet their legal obligations with less hassle. Automated reporting, certification tracking, and traceability tools mean far fewer headaches and more focus on driving value.
Critically, digital technology strongly supports national and global goals towards creating a circular economy, increasing the reuse of green parts, less waste, and reducing carbon emissions. So, from acquisition and inventory to sale, every stage benefits from smarter tech.
Perhaps the most pressing reason to embrace digitalisation is this: without it, managing growth becomes nearly impossible. Manual systems can’t keep pace with rising demand or the increasing complexity of modern operations. Businesses that fail to digitise risk being left behind – not just by competitors, but also by the high expectations of insurers, repairers, and individual customers, who all demand speed, transparency and reliability.
Digitalisation isn’t just a trend, it’s a necessity. As the vehicle recycling sector continues to professionalise and expand, those who adopt new technology will not only survive – they will thrive.
