As the vehicle recycling industry continues to evolve, this year’s Complete Auto Recycling Show (CARS) marked a significant moment of transition. For the first time, CARS was hosted as part of the wider Environmental Services & Solutions Expo (ESS), held at Birmingham’s NEC in September, joining forces with a range of sectors across the recycling and environmental services landscape.
ESS welcomed over 15,000 attendees across its various co-located shows. Of these, 978 visitors specifically attended the CARS section, demonstrating the continued interest and relevance of the vehicle recycling sector. A dedicated space was set aside within the ESS show floor for CARS exhibitors, where businesses representing all aspects of UK vehicle recycling showcased their products, services, and innovations.
The combination of CARS with the wider ESS platform provided attendees with a unique opportunity to not only meet familiar faces from within the auto recycling community but also to network with professionals from adjacent sectors. Exhibitors reported a strong level of engagement, with footfall from both UK and international visitors, including delegates from the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) and several European countries.
The event featured a packed schedule of seminars and speaker sessions, covering a broad range of timely and future-focused topics. These included the role of artificial intelligence in streamlining vehicle processing, the complex issue of vehicle exports, and insights into compliance, depollution, and circular economy strategies. A strong speaker lineup added to the appeal, with representatives from Nissan, SYNETIQ, ELADENE, and others taking to the stage to share their expertise.
The Skills Lab hosted a series of four workshops—two each day—focused on the dismantling of end-of-life electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs and HEVs). Presented by Elevate and Charg-Ed, the sessions provided recyclers with practical insights into safe and efficient EV/HEV teardown procedures. Meanwhile, a dedicated outdoor area featured live demonstrations of heavy equipment and dismantling machinery in action.
The two-day event wasn’t just about business. Networking was front and centre, with a relaxed yet lively drinks reception held on the first evening, co-hosted by ELADENE and Green Car Depollution. The evening allowed attendees to wind down, share insights informally, and build new connections in a more social setting, something the industry continues to value highly.
By integrating with ESS, CARS opened up new avenues for collaboration and cross-sector awareness, giving the vehicle recycling industry a louder voice within the broader environmental solutions conversation. The strong turnout and positive engagement suggest that this format could become a new benchmark for how the sector presents itself on the national and international stage.
As the industry navigates increasing regulation, rapid technological change, and growing global interest in sustainable practices, platforms like CARS, especially when aligned with broader environmental events, will play an essential role in shaping the future of vehicle recycling in the UK and beyond.
