The Green Parts Specialists is supporting Coventry University’s AME and SUSTAIN Steel on research to improve vehicle dismantling and metal recovery. By supplying 20 end-of-life vehicles for testing, the project aims to identify faster, more cost-effective extraction methods while maintaining material purity and supporting higher-value recycling across the automotive supply chain.

The Green Parts Specialists (GPS) is working with Coventry University’s Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) on a series of innovation projects focused on improving vehicle recycling and material recovery.
The work, being carried out alongside SUSTAIN Steel, is exploring how vehicle dismantling can be made more efficient while maximising the value recovered from end-of-life vehicle metals. A key focus is maintaining material purity, which is becoming increasingly important as the automotive sector places greater emphasis on recycled content and circular material supply chains.
To support the first phase of the project, GPS supplied Coventry University with 20 end-of-life vehicles. The vehicles are being used to test a range of extraction techniques, processes and tools, with researchers assessing which approaches deliver the best results in terms of recovery value, processing speed and cost-effectiveness.
The project reflects the growing need for closer collaboration between vehicle recyclers, manufacturers, researchers and material specialists. As future vehicle design, recycled-content targets and end-of-life treatment requirements continue to evolve, practical research into dismantling efficiency and material separation will play an increasingly important role.
GPS said the collaboration has the potential to benefit not only its own operations, but the wider automotive recycling sector by helping identify more effective ways to recover high-quality materials from end-of-life vehicles.
The company said it looks forward to seeing the results of the research as it progresses and to understanding how the findings could support better practice across the industry.
