Battery Safe Solutions developed the BSS400 to give ATFs a practical, engineered response to rising lithium-ion battery fire risks. Drawing on Philip Ramsdale’s experience in high-risk steel fabrication, the UK-made, fire-resistant container is designed to safely store and transport damaged batteries, contain thermal runaway and reduce operational, insurance and reputational exposure.

Philip Ramsdale, founder of Battery Safe Solutions, explains how his background in British steel fabrication and high-risk engineering led to the development of the BSS400, a fire-resistant battery container designed around the practical realities of thermal runaway.
Lithium battery fires in the UK are rising, with firefighters now tackling a lithium-ion battery fire every five hours. The annual cost is estimated at over £1bn, and beyond the direct damage to stock and property, businesses also face lost productivity, regulatory scrutiny and reputational damage. For ATFs, the first wave of mass-market EVs sold a decade ago is now reaching end of life, and the batteries arriving at dismantlers’ yards mean that risk will only grow.
Philip Ramsdale is the founder of Battery Safe Solutions, a battery container manufacturer built on British engineering. He has more than 20 years’ experience in steel fabrication engineering, having worked his way up from apprentice to Managing Director at a 100-year-old UK steel fabricator.
During that time, he supported global companies with the design and manufacture of everything from pressure vessels to armoured steel military vehicles built to withstand IEDs and RPG rounds. When designing the BSS400, Battery Safe Solutions drew on that experience to build something different: safer, easier to use and more cost-effective than anything already on the market.
Ramsdale believes lithium batteries are central to the net zero transition, and that the transition will only work if the supply chain handling them, from manufacturers through to recyclers, can store and move batteries safely at scale.
Every fire that causes damage, every site closure or, worse, creates fear, friction and insurance pressure, slows the transition. Battery Safe Solutions’ aim is to build resilience into that supply chain, making the difference between a business feeling exposed and one with genuine peace of mind for its people and property.
The company’s product, the BSS400, does not require additional fill materials such as fire pillows or glass granules. The fire resistance is built into the steel structure itself through proprietary insulation.

The container uses an L-shaped lid that opens for easy access and facilitates the lifting of heavy batteries.
Within the automotive supply chain, Battery Safe Solutions focuses on cutting waste from material usage and production rather than from the safety case. The company manufactures in the UK, with no middleman between it and the customer, keeping costs competitive without cutting corners.
That discipline, reducing cost without ever reducing quality, comes from Ramsdale’s years spent doing exactly that for some of the largest OEMs in Britain.
The company is also working to remain present in the wider industry conversation. Its team has attended fire safety, ATF Professional and battery shows throughout the year, speaking to the people dealing directly with thermal-runaway incidents on site.
Battery Safe Solutions is also working with the University of Manchester and the Henry Royce Institute on further research and development.
Most people dealing with lithium batteries already understand the risk. What the industry needs is equipment built by people who understand both the engineering and the constraints under which operators are working.
Battery Safe Solutions considers itself a problem-solving business at heart and intends to continue developing practical solutions to these challenges.
