UK vehicle scrappage enquiries are rising as higher repair costs make ageing cars increasingly uneconomical to keep on the road. National Scrap Car reports summer enquiries up 18% year on year, with June up 47%, suggesting Bank Holiday travel and growing maintenance costs could drive more vehicles into salvage and recycling.

National Scrap Car data reveals summer scrappage enquiries increased 18% year on year, with June alone up 47%, signalling a shift for the automotive aftermarket as motorists weigh up the cost of keeping ageing vehicles on the road.
Search interest is also climbing, with UK Google search interest for ‘scrap my car’ up 650% (1) compared with this time last year, which suggests more motorists are considering whether to part with older vehicles.
For many drivers, the cost of dealing with faults is becoming harder to absorb. Research from YouGov in June found that 31% of Brits don’t feel confident covering unexpected expenses such as car repairs, highlighting the wider affordability pressures facing motorists hit with unplanned bills (2).
At the same time, the cost of vehicle maintenance and repair services has continued to rise. ONS Services Producer Price Index data shows the index for motor vehicle maintenance and repair services increased by around 21% between 2023 and Q2 2026, from 133.1 to 161.4 (3).
For the automotive aftermarket, rising scrappage enquiries could provide an early indication of changing end-of-life vehicle volumes. If the trend continues, garages and repairers may see more motorists deciding against costly repairs on ageing vehicles, while dismantlers, recyclers and ELV operators could see increased volumes entering the salvage and recycling market.

Ford Focus tops UK’s most commonly scrapped vehicles
With the August Bank Holiday expected to pack the roads (4) this weekend, National Scrap Car’s data shows a strong Ford presence in end-of-life vehicle volumes, particularly in August. The Ford Focus Zetec was the most commonly scrapped model in both August 2024 and August 2025, with scrappage volumes rising 10% year on year, while Ford models accounted for almost half of the vehicles in August 2025’s top 10 most commonly scrapped list.
National Scrap Car also analysed three years of internal scrappage records to identify the vehicles most commonly reaching the end of their usable life in the UK today.

The rankings provide a snapshot of the vehicles now reaching the later stages of their lifecycles, with some of the UK’s most familiar and widely owned models dominating the list.

“Cars like the Focus, Fiesta, Golf and Polo have been among the UK’s most widely owned vehicles for years, and we’re now seeing those high-volume models reach the stage where age, mileage and repair costs start to catch up with them.
A car doesn’t have to completely fail to be scrapped. One major engine, gearbox, electrical or emissions-related repair can be enough to make keeping an older vehicle uneconomical. What may be changing is how quickly motorists reach that decision point. As repair bills climb, faults that might once have been worth fixing can tip the balance sooner.
For the market, that could mean more vehicles entering salvage and recycling earlier, increasing the supply of reusable parts while potentially reducing the number of older cars receiving major repairs.
With repair costs still on the rise, we expect that trend to continue, particularly as longer Bank Holiday journeys and heavy traffic will continue to expose underlying faults in ageing vehicles.”

Methodology
National Scrap Car analysed its internal vehicle scrappage records covering a three-year period (January 2024- July 2026) to identify the makes and models most frequently scrapped across the UK. Individual model variants (e.g. Ford Focus Zetec, Focus Titanium and Focus Zetec TDCi) were grouped at model level to produce an overall ranking of the UK’s most commonly scrapped vehicles.
