Altilium has appointed former UK Chief of Defence Staff Lord Peach as Board Advisor for Defence, Resilience & Sovereign Supply Chains. He will support the company’s work to strengthen domestic recovery of critical battery materials, reduce reliance on overseas supply chains and improve access to lithium, nickel, cobalt and graphite for UK industry and defence.

Altilium, a UK-based clean technology company focused on sustainable recovery of critical battery materials, has today announced the appointment of Air Chief Marshal The Lord Peach KG GBE KCB DL as Board Advisor for Defence, Resilience & Sovereign Supply Chains, as the company looks to strengthen its position at the intersection of critical minerals, battery recycling, defence and UK industrial strategy.
The appointment reflects Altilium’s ambition to establish itself as a strategically important UK capability for the recovery and production of critical battery materials, reducing reliance on concentrated overseas supply chains and supporting secure domestic access to materials required for the UK’s automotive, energy and defence sectors.
In this new role, Lord Peach will advise Altilium on strategic engagement with Government, defence organisations, industry and other key stakeholders, helping to position its technology and facilities as strategically relevant to UK national resilience.
He will also support the company in identifying opportunities where domestic recovery of critical battery materials can address vulnerabilities in UK and allied defence and industrial supply chains.
Lord Peach brings extensive experience at the highest levels of UK defence, national security and NATO. He is the only UK and NATO military officer to have completed two three-star and four-star tours of duty, including UK Chief of Defence Staff and Chair of NATO’s Military Committee, NATO’s most senior military appointment. He is now a Crossbench Peer in the House of Lords and Strategic Adviser to a number of Boards and Advisory Groups.
The appointment comes as secure access to critical minerals is becoming a key strategic priority for national security and defence policy. A growing range of defence platforms and systems are reliant on complex overseas supply chains for strategically important raw materials, while growing geopolitical tensions, export restrictions and geographic concentration of mining and refining are increasing the focus on supply chain resilience.
Lord Peach commented:
“The circular economy is vital to our national resilience. Within that, we need to develop – quickly – a sovereign materiel strategy to develop the capabilities we need for defence, national security and growth. Altilium is already part of that story. I am excited to be part of the team helping to grow and scale up this important company.”
Dr Christian Marston, COO of Altilium, commented:
“We are delighted to welcome Lord Peach as an advisor to Altilium. His exceptional experience will bring an important strategic perspective as we develop our role within the UK’s critical minerals ecosystem. Critical minerals are no longer simply a question of industrial competitiveness or the energy transition. They are increasingly a national security issue. By building the capability to recover and refine these materials here in Britain, we can reduce exposure to global supply disruption while supporting a stronger and more sovereign industrial base.”
The UK Government’s Critical Minerals Strategy identifies critical minerals as essential to the UK’s economy and national security and highlights the need to strengthen domestic recycling capabilities to help enable a circular economy and reduce the impact of external supply shocks. The strategy also commits the Government to consider targeted, industry-led measures to strengthen resilience in critical mineral supplies for UK defence.
This aligns with the Ministry of Defence’s commitments to build resilience in critical mineral supplies for UK defence.
Altilium is helping to support supply chain resilience through the scale-up of its advanced battery recycling and critical minerals recovery capabilities. By recovering lithium, nickel, cobalt and graphite from end-of-life EV batteries and processing them into high-value materials for reuse in new cell production, the company is establishing a secure domestic source of strategic materials while reducing reliance on imported virgin resources.
Lord Peach’s appointment comes at a time of significant expansion for Altilium. Earlier this year, the company secured £18.5 million in grant funding through the UK Government’s DRIVE35 programme, delivered by the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) and Innovate UK, to support the development of its ACT 3 facility in Plymouth, the UK’s first commercial refinery for recovery of critical battery materials from end-of life EV batteries.
