L-R Ian Camilleri and Steve Diaper, celebrating 23 years’ service – Silverlake Automotive Recycling

Ian first joined the company in 1986, aged 18, working in the stores department, moving to Front Counter Sales within his first eight years. As a City & Guilds graduate in Engineering, Ian particularly enjoyed supporting customers in dismantling parts and developing this skill in others in his team. Eager to experience different industries, Ian then left Silverlake to pursue self-employed work with one assignment seeing him sub-contracted to the Maritime Coast Guard Agency. Here he used his mechanical experience to take care of specialist equipment for the oil spill recovery centre, and in 1996, Ian spent five months on the Pembrokeshire coast working to reduce the environmental impact of a 70,000-tonne crude oil spillage from stricken vessel, The Sea Empress.

Ian returned to Silverlake on 10th April 2006 after a chance meeting with Allen Prebble, Managing Director. An accident at work had forced Ian to take leave for some months, but meeting with Allen, he was invited back to Silverlake, where he returned to telesales, a role where his injury was not a hindrance.  Before long, Ian was Parts Sales Manager, testament to the confidence he had gained from his diverse experience when working away from the business. Once his arm was healed, Ian was keen to get back to his engineering roots, and he took over the running of the Dismantling Workshop, introducing new processes to improve efficiency, many of which are still used today.

Ian is now an accredited vehicle assessor, imaging and indicating vehicle salvage categorisation for insurer clients, and is working towards his AQP qualification.

Commenting on his time with Silverlake, Ian said:

“My work is hugely rewarding, and I know that I am making a difference to the business and our clients. I’ve known the people at Silverlake for a very long time, and they feel like extended family.  My son, Matt, heads up eBay sales and has been with the company for over 13 years, having started as a Saturday boy.  We are all excited about what the future holds for the business as demand for recycled green parts continues to grow and on a personal level.

I’m delighted that management is investing in a new vehicle assessment area as part of extended infrastructure plans.”

Steve Diaper, Operations Manager commented:

“It is fantastic that Ian chose to return to Silverlake and has continued to build his career with us. His varied experience makes him a great problem solver and a highly valued and respected member of the team. Accuracy in vehicle categorisation is vital for our customers, our regulatory compliance and our professional reputation and Ian’s training and expertise in vehicle assessment supports our delivery of a high quality, professional service. Our exceptional staff retention rates are evidence of Silverlake’s culture of taking pride in our products and services, investing in our people and recognising and rewarding their efforts. We are the largest automotive recycling employer in Hampshire, and we aim to be the employer of choice.”
